Workshop summary

We’ve all seen too many examples of bad questionnaires where our response is “Ouch!” It’s not easy to create a great survey, but there are ways to make better ones.

What will the attendees learn?

Come to this half-day workshop to learn four ways to improve your survey so that you get plenty of useful responses. It’s a workshop, not a lecture. You’ll be working on practical examples using Caroline’s ideas, and you’ll have the opportunity to bring your own experiences and discuss them with her and with other attendees.

  • Goals: Ruthlessly focus your survey on an immediate decision. – We will look at the survey process from goals to decisions. You’ll practice working through an exercise that helps you to make sure that your survey will give you the data you need to make a good decision.
  • Sample: Write an invitation that makes people want to answer. – You’ll learn why people do or do not respond to survey invitations, and will put the theory into practice by writing an invitation to an example survey
  • Questions: Ditch the rating scales. – You’ll learn about the four steps of answering a question, and why the rating scales we see everywhere are difficult to create. You’ll practice turning a rating question into a good question.
  • Responses: Lose your fear of open answers – Although it’s true that numeric answers can be easier to analyse, open answers can get you more accurate data. You’ll learn about the benefits and challenges of open answers and you’ll practice turning a set of open answers into rich data.

Caroline is the author of “Surveys that work: A Practical Guide for Designing and Running Better Surveys” and has years of experience of helping clients to improve surveys. Come to her workshop to practice some of her techniques and to learn and share with other attendees.
