Evaluating employees has been a hot topic in management for more than 100 years. For the last three years at the company Etnetera, everyone has had to justify their annual bonuses in front of the entire team. Agile coach Karel Smutný has invited Etnetera CEO Martin Palička, a team leader, and a developer to share their experiences so far with this unconventional form of review. During this panel discussion, you’ll get a chance to hear about this practice from the perspective of both the head of the company and a leader of a team, as well as gain insight from someone, who has pretty much seen it all during the last 10 years at the company.
Karel is an Agile coach and programmer. He mainly works with large companies, helping them to improve transparency and humanize their software development processes. He gets rid of the old carpet and helps sweep any old buildup from over the years out the door. In his spare time, he builds with Legos and programs with his kids.
Martin left the world of finance in 2000 to join Etnetera, one of the leading Czech players in custom web and mobile application development. The company is not only famous for its client portfolio, but also for its casual work environment, which is based on the principles and ideas of a “free company”. Martin is also a board member of Etnetera Group, which currently includes seven companies, and responsible for financial management as well as acquisition. He enjoys playing soccer and volleyball, rides his bike to work, and is always up for a glass of good wine.
Martin has been involved in web development practically from the time of its start in the Czech Republic. Since then, he has witnessed a lot in the field and had a hand in some of the biggest projects in Czech internet. His main reason for joining Etnetera was the company’s use of common sense in the workplace - not only does it overrule bureaucracy and strict rules, it also prevails over normal procedures, which are often taken as unquestioned dogma in the outside world. Having the freedom to question is one of the things he enjoys most.
Martin started out at Etnetera as an administrator. Today, he leads the IT division and is a member of management. Openness, freedom, and elegant solutions are very important to him. As a result, he sees both the use and implementation of Open Source software as a form of personal development. Whether at the office or with a client, he is able to go deep into technical detail, while simultaneously negotiating the operating conditions of systems.
