Talk details:
The world isn’t getting any less global. In fact, the vast majority of new users of the web are readers and speakers of languages other than English. So, how do we ensure our websites and applications are ready for prime time regardless of the user’s encoding, charset, writing direction, and annotation needs?
In this linguistic excursion through the best of what HTML and CSS now (and will soon) have to offer for multilingual implementations, Preston will talk about emerging support for multidirectional writing, ruby characters, and script-specific text decoration. On the way, he’ll also delve into a relatively underexplored area of multilingual web design: accessibility and how to ensure text is read in the correct dialect — no matter where it ends up.
