Beyond compliance: Accessibility insights at WebExpo 2025

Accessibility remains an integral theme at WebExpo, a tradition dating back to its first accessibility-focused talk on WCAG 2.0 in 2009. This year, WebExpo 2025 continues to build upon this legacy with a thoughtfully curated selection of talks, an interactive full-day workshop, and a panel discussion, all dedicated to inclusive digital experiences.

What can you expect from WebExpo 2025 on accessibility?

Stéphanie Walter, a UX researcher and strategist based in Luxembourg, will contribute to the WebExpo program with two separate sessions. In her talk Designing beyond the happy path, she challenges designers to consider edge cases—situations often overlooked but crucial for genuinely inclusive design. Stéphanie will demonstrate how proactively addressing these scenarios can lead to stronger, more inclusive products.

In her full-day Premium Workshop Accessibility for designers – from mockups to documentation, Stéphanie will guide participants through the practical aspects of accessible design. Attendees will learn how to spot accessibility issues early, refine their mockups, and effectively communicate accessibility principles across their teams.

Accessibility specialist Lukáš Hosnedl from the Teiresias Center at Masaryk University, in his talk Killing accessibility with one line of code: The danger of accessibility overlays explained, will tackle the problematic trend of accessibility overlays. He’ll explain why these quick fixes, though tempting, often worsen user experiences rather than improve them, providing valuable insights based on his daily experiences as both a blind user and expert.

Ondřej Pohl, Accessibility Director at ACTUM Digital, will present Accessibility uncovered: Typical mistakes that go beyond the standards, a session focusing on real-world accessibility mistakes often encountered in digital products. His practical session will offer concrete guidance on addressing and preventing such common pitfalls.

In their session titled Digital accessibility meets physical accessibility, Erik Gustafsson Spagnoli, Nathalie Pentler, and Daniel Göransson from Sweden will explore how digital accessibility principles can be applied effectively to physical environments, particularly digital displays and self-service terminals. They will provide expertise based on testing and user experiences, highlighting common accessibility issues and offering concrete advice for developers and designers. Their practical examples will illustrate compliance with the European Accessibility Act and demonstrate the importance of user-centred design in creating truly inclusive public spaces.

Tip – you can read interviews with some of the speakers on the Poslepu.cz blog during the next weeks.

Are you ready for the European Accessibility Act?

An additional highlight of WebExpo 2025 will be the panel discussion Accessibility in practice: Why customer experience trumps legal requirements featuring accessibility experts who will bring both professional perspectives and personal experiences with disability. The panel will address the practical aspects of accessibility, emphasising why customer experience is more impactful than legal compliance alone.

This panel discussion builds upon last year’s Discomfort Zonesession, providing continuity in exploring challenging accessibility topics. Last year, participants appreciated the candid exchange of ideas.

This year’s panel aims to continue these conversations, offering an ideal opportunity to learn from peers, share your own experiences, and ask the tough questions about accessibility that often go unasked.
